Shipments of CD’s are declining sharply says the Recording Industry Association of America, while the downloading of digital music continues to become more popular. From 2005 to 2006, CD shipments dropped by more than half (53%) since 2000 when shipments peaked. This six year decrease represents a $4 billion loss. Yet in 2006, digital music downloads on singles and albums increased 60% and 103% over 2005, respectively.

Reasons for the quick decline of the CD industry include the closing of music stores in favor of the number one and two mass merchandisers Wal-mart and Target, the ease of selecting music online, digital copying, downloading and piracy and the price differential of CD’s versus online downloading.

National Survey Network has commissioned the following report, “Trend Report 2007 Music” to study current music purchasing and consumption behaviors.
