Delivering payloads into space is an expensive task with current rocket technology. The rocket systems currently employed are single use systems and have to be discarded after every launch. Reusable Launch Systems (RLS) envisions rocket systems which can be used multiple times, i.e. the rocket can be launched, deliver payload in space and safely land back on earth so that it can be used again. Space X and Blue origins are one of the major players working on this technology. Falcon 9 by Space X has successfully delivered payloads into space and landed on earth. Falcon 9 RLS successfully landed 4 times out of 6 attempts in between Dec 2015 to May 2016. Blue Origins New Shepard is also pioneering in this space. New Shepard has already compiled three successful flights.
With recent advancement RLS is seeing massive interest from many companies as if successful this technology could bring down the price of rocket systems drastically. This could also open new opportunities like space tourism. The system has huge potential, driving many startups and governments to look into this market. Space X and Blue origins are the primary players pioneering in this space. Many aircraft manufacturers are expected to invest in this market space in coming years.
