Single-serve packages can help limit serving size and prevent overconsumption of nutrient-dense, calorie-rich whole foods, such as nuts and dried fruit. However, consumers are disinclined to pay a premium for portion control and report an unwillingness to seek out small packages for their healthy snacks. The benefit of single-serve packages really lies in the handheld convenience and portability of these packages over a bulky bag full of loose bits and handfuls of nuts, dried fruit, and trail mix.

Sunsweet Ones, individually wrapped dried plums, have enjoyed success and lifted sales for the entire Sunsweet brand. This particular dried fruit type can be unpleasantly sticky, and wrapping each bite-sized piece is a practical and appetizing solution. Other dried fruit types do not confront the same stickiness problem, nor do most fruit come in a size large enough to justify a one-at-a-time package. But a two- or three-pack is feasible for apricots, figs, or dates.
