Introduction:

The US market for nonvascular interventional radiology devices, comprising disposable radiofrequency (RF) ablation and cryoablation devices for liver, kidney, and lung cancer treatment, percutaneous drainage catheters, and soft tissue biopsy needles, was valued at just under $230 million in 2010. Revenue growth will be sustained primarily by the rising incidence of conditions for which ablation devices, drainage catheters, and biopsy needles are used for treatment or diagnosis-a trend supported by the aging US population-and the increasing preference for minimally invasive procedures over the forecast period. This will in turn be encouraged by the benefits of minimally invasive techniques-including shorter recovery times and reduced patient complications of surgery-and the release of clinical research supporting the efficacy of these treatments. Although the strong presence of group purchasing organizations (GPOs) will apply downward pressure on average selling prices (ASPs), relatively few competitors are active in the US RF ablation and cryoablation device segments, rendering them resistant to significant price erosion. As a result, this market will experience rapid expansion through 2015.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • Cryoablation and microwave ablation are two ablation techniques that compete with RF ablation for the treatment of kidney, liver, and lung cancer. What factors are driving the adoption of cryoablation and microwave ablation? How will the growth of RF ablation be affected by the presence of these alternative ablation techniques?
  • According to US interventional radiologists surveyed in this report, alternative ablation techniques to RF ablation are currently being adopted in clinical practice for the treatment of kidney, liver, and lung cancers. While clinical studies such as the RAPTURE (Radiofrequency Ablation of Pulmonary Tumors Response Evaluation) study have demonstrated the efficacy of RF ablation, physicians continue to await research that evaluates the long-term efficacy and safety of cryoablation and microwave ablation in comparison to RF ablation. Which alternative ablation technologies are interventional radiologists adopting? What are the perceptions physicians have of these new ablation technologies in the US? For the treatment of which cancer types will alternative ablation technologies be adopted?
  • GPOs play a key role in negotiating purchasing contracts with vendors-both manufacturers and distributors-to obtain the best discounted savings for high-volume products, such as percutaneous drainage catheters, for hospitals. How will GPOs impact ASPs in the percutaneous drainage catheter market? What strategies are medical device companies exploring to expand their market penetration?
  • Core needle biopsy and fine needle biopsy are two types of procedures using percutaneous soft tissue biopsy needles used to assist physicians in diagnosing patients with cancer. How will the use of vacuum-assisted biopsies impact core needle biopsy and fine needle biopsy procedure volumes with the rising incidence of cancer?
