Introduction:

The Indian orthopedic device market comprises sales of reconstructive joint implants, trauma devices, spinal implants, and bone graft substitutes (BGS) and will expand robustly through 2015. Market growth will be driven primarily by the growing aging population—this demographic is the most susceptible to injuries and degenerative health conditions that require the use of orthopedic devices. Increasing clinical adoption of orthopedic devices and the growing popularity of medical tourism will also drive the Indian orthopedic market through 2015. Improving economic conditions and government efforts to make health care more accessible and affordable for patients will also contribute to procedural growth. The penetration of premium-priced devices into the market, however, will be limited by high price sensitivity in India. Furthermore, economic disparity and widespread poverty contributes to the inability of most of the population to pay the high price associated with these surgeries. Overall, this combination of factors will cause the Indian orthopedic device market to grow at a strong and increasing rate over the forecast period.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • The Indian economy is one of the fastest-growing in the world. As the economic wealth of the average citizen in these countries grows, the affordability of expensive orthopedic surgeries will rise. How will the number of orthopedic device procedures be affected by the growing economy in India? Which of the segments will be the most impacted by the improving economy? How will this affect the market for domestic and imported devices?
  • The average selling price (ASP) of reconstructive hip, knee, and shoulder implants will remain relatively low in India from 2009 to 2015. To what extent will economic growth and government investment impact device ASPs? What impact will innovation and the entrance of premium-priced technologies have on the Indian reconstructive hip, knee, and shoulder implant markets as a whole?
  • As of 2010, large global orthopedic device manufacturers garnered the slight majority of trauma device revenues; however, domestic manufacturers are increasingly penetrating the market. What strategies are large global orthopedic device manufacturers employing to gain a deeper foothold in the Indian trauma device market? What impact will the increasing presence of domestic manufacturers have on Indian trauma device ASPs?
  • Minimally invasive spinal fusion procedures are growing in popularity in India. These procedures are popular because they result in less trauma and blood loss for the patient resulting in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. How fast will the adoption of minimally invasive procedures be in India? How many spinal fusion procedures will use a minimally invasive approach in 2015? How quick will lateral lumbar interbody fusion procedures grow in popularity over the forecast period?
  • As the patient population continues to age and life expectancy continue to rise in India, there will be an increase in the number of people suffering from degenerative conditions, thereby augmenting the number of surgeries that require bone graft material. As accessibility to and awareness of BGS materials increase, there will be a shift away from autograft toward BGS materials in surgical procedures. What types of procedural applications will show the strongest adoption of BGS materials? What is driving the adoption of certain BGS materials over others in India?
