Introduction:
The US market for high-acuity information systems (HAIS) is rapidly growing and highly dynamic. The introduction of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has provided incentive funding for hospitals that adopt electronic health record (EHR) technology, which has created new interest and immense demand for health care information technology (IT) solutions, including HAIS. This is especially true for emergency department information systems (EDIS) because hospitals can demonstrate numerous measures of meaningful use of EHR specifically in the emergency department (ED), which will allow them to qualify for incentive funding. Perioperative and critical care information systems will also benefit from the HITECH Act as hospitals seek to increase continuity in electronic data capture throughout the health care continuum. Although growth will be somewhat inhibited by competing IT needs among various departments in the hospital-in addition to tough economic conditions and physician pushback regarding information system adoption-the market for HAIS is an extremely attractive one and will exhibit significant growth through 2015.
Questions Answered in This Report:
- Incentive funding from ARRA will positively affect each of the segments of the HAIS market differently and at various points during the forecast period. How will the impact of this incentive funding evolve over the forecast period? Why will adoption occur in the EDIS sooner than in the other segments? What trends occur in the perioperative information system (POIS) and critical care information system (CCIS) segments and when?
- The report contains commentary from a number of chief information officers (CIOs) in the US on the topic of HAIS. What trends to CIOs view as impacting the HAIS market more significantly? What did they express as being major advantages and concerns? What feedback do they have regarding their experience working with various vendors?
- Within the US HAIS market, both best-of-breed and integrated vendors exist. What are the advantages and disadvantages associated with each vendor type? What do CIOs believe the future outlook will be for these two kinds of vendors? How will the effects of ARRA impact these two vendor types?
- The market for anesthesia information systems (AIS)-both as stand-alone systems and combined with POIS-is one of the fastest-growing segments of the US HAIS market. What factors will drive the adoption of AIS? How quickly will this market expand over the forecast period?
