Introduction:

The gynecological device market is composed of sales of global endometrial ablation (GEA) devices, female sterilization devices, fluid management systems, hysteroscopes, uterine artery embolization (UAE) devices, endometrial resection devices, assisted reproductive consumables (ARCs), and colposcopes. The main factor driving market growth in all segments over the forecast period will be physician and patient preference for the fastest, least invasive, and least painful methods of treatment available. Growth through 2015 will also be fueled by expanding GEA and transcervical female sterilization procedure volumes. Due to the minimally invasive nature of GEA procedures, they will increasingly be performed in office settings. In addiiton, a growing tendency by manufacturers to bundle transcervical female sterilization devices for use in GEAs will allow gynecologists to benefit from the increased operational efficiency and cost effectiveness. These advantages will encourage greater physician adoption of GEAs, promoting greater patient access to the treatment. Despite the positive impacts of device bundling, however, adoption of particular devices in this market will occur at the expense of other competing technologies, thus hindering market expansion. For example, GEA, endometrial resection, and hysterectomies are all used for the treatment of menorrhagia. Nonetheless, overall procedural increases will be sufficient to overcome this limiter, promoting positive growth in the US gynecological device market through 2015.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • A number of new product launches and strategic alliances among competitors took place in the GEA device market in 2010. What product innovations best position device manufacturers for success in this market? How will strategic partnerships impact the performance of companies in this market? What sales strategies are employed by GEA device companies?
  • Hysterectomy procedure volumes are on the decline in the US. Why are procedure volumes declining? What impact will this decline have on sales of devices used during these procedures? What alternative treatments are replacing hysterectomies?
  • The economic downturn negatively impacted the US gynecological device market, leading many hospitals to freeze capital spending budgets. In addition, the delaying of elective procedures by patients facing greater financial constraints saw visits to gynecological offices decline in recent years. How will capital spending be affected as the economy begins to show early signs of recovery? Which procedures were most impacted by the recession? How will these procedures perform going forward? Will elective gynecological procedure volumes improve over the forecast period?
  • Female sterilization procedures will continue to increase over the forecast period. Which types of female sterilization procedures will be adopted the fastest over the forecast period? What device characteristics spur adoption among physicians performing these procedures?
