Introduction:

The European peripheral vascular (PV) device market includes revenues generated in Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg), the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden), Spain, and Switzerland. The rising prevalence of peripheral vascular disease (PVD) in Europe-which will be fueled by the aging population and complicated by growing rates of obesity and diabetes-will spur demand for PV procedures. Greater awareness of PVD and better access to health care will also lead to more patients seeking treatments, thereby driving procedure volumes and PV device sales. These factors will help offset the negative impact of limited reimbursement due to the budget constraints in public health care systems in most European countries. As a result, the European market for PV devices will expand at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 6% through 2015.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • Endovascular treatment of aortic disease is gaining widespread acceptance and adoption by physicians in Europe . What factors are driving adoption for abdominal and thoracic stent graft procedures? How will penetration rates of endovascular repair procedures compare to alternative surgical procedures?
  • Preliminary results from CREST (Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial) were released in 2010, comparing carotid stenting against endarterectomy. What effect will trial results have on procedural growth and adoption of peripheral stenting in the carotid artery? Will all European countries experience similar trends as a result of CREST data?
  • European public health care systems are under strong pressure to contain costs for health care expenditures. How does cost containment affect revenue growth? What is the effect on average selling prices?
  • Physicians in Europe tend to be more conservative than those in the US. How will physician tendencies affect their interpretation of clinical trial results such as CREST and long-term results of EVAR-1 (United Kingdom Endovascular Aneurysm Repair 1)? How will this affect the adoption of new products?
  • Plain old balloon angiplasty (POBA) remains a strong competing treatment for lower-extremity indications due to its low cost compared to PV stenting. To what extent will the PTA balloon catheter market be hindered by PV stenting growth? What will be the effect of new balloon catheters in the PTA market? Which indications will device manufacturers focus on in order to secure market share?
