Introduction:

The European facial injectable market-comprising revenues from the sale of botulinum toxin (BTX), hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, and particle and polymer filler (PPF) products sold in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK-emerged out of the economic recession and posted modest growth from 2009 to 2010. With economic conditions beginning to improve, aesthetically conscious Europeans who had postponed or canceled cosmetic procedures were prompted to receive treatment, particularly as manufacturers made attempts to generate sales through heavy discounts and other efforts. Through 2015, market gains will accelerate as disposable incomes increase and consumer demand-among women and men-climbs for antiaging treatments and cosmetic enhancements that improve career prospects. The market was also boosted by greater product availability, such as Ipsen's Azzalure and Merz Pharma's BOCOUTURE. The combined use of multiple facial injectable products to treat the entire face and in conjunction with plastic surgery to achieve superior aesthetic results will also drive unit sales, thereby offsetting average selling prices (ASPs) declines due to price competition. ASPs will, however, stabilize as the markets recover from the downturn and as more premium products become available. Overall, this combination of factors will lead to robust growth in the European facial injectable market through 2015.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • In Europe, the facial injectable market suffered greatly during the global recession in 2008 and 2009. By 2010, however, the market showed signs of strong recovery. What are the factors that are driving this upturn? How will market recovery and growth differ across the countries covered in this report?
  • Aesthetic surgeons in Europe are increasingly offering BTX and dermal filler treatments in combination with each other, as well as in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures to enhance the aesthetic results and the duration of the cosmetic effects of these procedures. To what extent will the trend toward combination treatments affect sales of facial injectable products? What are competitors doing to capitalize on this trend? Which of the competitors are well positioned to benefit from the rising popularity of combination treatments?
  • The patient demographic for facial injectable procedures is expanding, with a rising number of younger women and men of all ages looking into undergoing these procedures. What is driving these new patient types to undergo facial injectable treatments? In which countries is this trend more prominent? How will this affect market growth?
  • The launch and adoption of Ipsen's Azzalure, which comes in a much smaller vial size compared to Dysport, resulted in a significant change in unit sales for 2010. How did the switch from 500-unit to 125-unit vial sizes impact BTX sales in each of the countries? In which countries is Azzalure being more rapidly adopted? What effect did the uptake of Azzalure have on ASPs, and what was the net effect on market growth?
