Introduction:

The Chinese orthopedic device market comprises sales of reconstructive joint implants, trauma fixation devices, spinal implants, and bone graft substitutes (BGS,) and will expand at a robust rate through 2015. Market growth will be driven primarily by the aging population-this demographic is the most susceptible to injuries and health conditions that require the use of orthopedic devices. Increasing clinical adoption of orthopedic devices will also drive the Chinese orthopedic device market through 2015. Average selling prices (ASPs) will increase slightly due to the rising penetration of premium-priced devices; however, growth potential will be limited by the high price sensitivity in China. Furthermore, economic disparities contribute to the incapability of most of the population to pay for the high costs required for these procedures. Nevertheless, the Chinese orthopedic device market will grow at a gradually increasing rate over the forecast period.

Questions Answered in This Report:
  • The Chinese economy is one of the fastest-growing in the world. As the economic wealth of the average citizen in these countries grows, the affordability of expensive orthopedic surgeries will rise. How will the number of orthopedic device procedures be affected by the growing economy in China? Which of the segments will be the most impacted by the improving economy? How will this affect the market for domestic and imported devices?
  • The ASP of reconstructive hip, knee, and shoulder implants will remain relatively low in China from 2009 to 2015. To what extent will economic growth and government investment impact device ASPs? What impact will innovation and the entrance of premium-priced technologies have on the Chinese reconstructive hip, knee, and shoulder implant markets as a whole?
  • As of 2010, large global orthopedic device manufacturers garnered the slight majority of trauma device revenues; however, domestic manufacturers are increasingly penetrating the market. What strategies are large global orthopedic device manufacturers employing to gain a deeper foothold in the Chinese trauma device market? What impact will the increasing presence of domestic manufacturers have on trauma device ASPs in China?
  • Minimally invasive spinal fusions are growing in popularity in China. These procedures are popular because they result in less trauma and blood loss for the patient, resulting in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. How fast will the adoption of minimally invasive procedures be in China? How many spinal fusions will use a minimally invasive approach by 2015? How quick will lateral lumbar interbody fusion volumes grow in popularity over the forecast period?
  • As the patient population continues to age and life expectancy continues to rise in China, there will be an increase in the number of people suffering from degenerative conditions, thereby augmenting the number of surgeries that require bone graft material. As accessibility to and awareness of BGS materials increase, there will be a shift away from autograft toward BGS materials in surgical procedures. What types of procedural applications will show the strongest adoption of BGS materials? What is driving the adoption of certain BGS materials over others in China?
