Radiology includes basic x-ray and more advanced forms such as digital x-ray and computed tomography (CT). Like all medical procedures, there is a risk-benefit factor associated with radiological diagnostic procedures. Potential cancer risks associated with radiation and accidental over-irradiation due to computed tomography (CT) protocol errors, have patient’s worried and radiologists taking measures to improve safety and limit patient exposure to unnecessary radiation.
According to a March 2009 report by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), over the past two decades the total exposure of the U.S. population to ionizing radiation has nearly doubled. Although partially due to natural sources, this rise is mainly accredited to increased exposure from CT, nuclear medicine, and interventional fluoroscopy.
The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has offered guidance in managing the risks of CT, fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine imaging procedures. To minimize the associated risks, SIR has focused safety measures on two principles: justifiable rationale for ordering and performing each procedure, and prudent optimization of the radiation dose used.
