This country of 191 million people is a growing market, and Brazil’s economy, while showing some effects of the world recession, has been less impacted than other nations. Investment in the healthcare system is making Brazil an increasingly attractive market opportunity for in vitro diagnostics companies. Although there are a number of challenges for diagnostic manufacturers to understand and overcome, the market for clinical diagnostics in Brazil (both reagents and instruments) is one of the most promising emerging markets in the world.

Brazilian Juggernaut Earns Attention of Major IVD Competitors, says Kalorama Information

August 25, 2010, New York — Brazil’s in vitro diagnostic market nearly doubled since 2003 and is growing at a faster than average rate compared to the IVD market worldwide, according to healthcare market research publisher Kalorama Information. With a population of 191 million, Brazil is by far the largest country in South America. There is a continuing trend towards urbanization, with most Brazilians now living in cities. According to a new report from Kalorama about the Brazilian diagnostics market, a growing economy and multi-billion dollar spending on healthcare have brought most of the significant IVD companies to the region.

“Brazil is the target of choice in Latin America,” says Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. “It’s a combination of three important factors: a large population makes it worth the resource commitment, the country survived the recession and healthcare spending is strong.”

According to Kalorama Information, Brazil spent US $126 billion on healthcare in 2009. Healthcare is provided at no charge to all of Brazil’s citizens at public hospitals; employees and employers contribute to the National Institute for Social Security (INPS) to pay for this service. Additionally, public resources for healthcare come from federal, state and municipal government budgets, as well as some foundations; specifically, the federal government funds 65% of public healthcare spending, while municipal and local sources fund the rest. Total spending on healthcare is roughly 8% of GDP.

Abbott, Bio-Rad, Siemens and Becton Dickinson are among the big players in Brazil, according to the report.
