Additional Information

Scope and Methodology

Home care encompasses skilled health care services, treatments, and support for daily activities provided by paid health-care workers in patients’ homes. For the purposes of this report, Kalorama Information divides the home health services market into the following five segments:

  • Infusion services;
  • Nursing and allied services;
  • Home renal dialysis;
  • Respiratory therapy; and
  • Home hospice care.

The home infusion therapy segment includes six categories: anti-infectives, chemotherapeutics, hydration, parenteral and enteral nutrition, pain medications, and other infusion therapies.

The home care market includes only those hospice services that are provided as part of routine or continuous home care. Other hospice services, such as inpatient respite care, general inpatient care, and physician services, are not covered in this report. The home hospice care market does not include hospice services provided in hospitals, physicians’ offices, or long-term care facilities.

The home care services market also does not include the rental and sale of medical equipment, except when it is purchased at the time of a home health visit. The rental and sale of home medical products are detailed in the Kalorama Information report, The Home Care Products Market, published in March 1998 (with a new edition scheduled for mid-2000.)

Noteworthy home services, such as disease state management programs, perinatal care, and pediatric care are qualitatively discussed in Chapter 9, but market estimates are not provided because the estimates of nursing time and other types of care are counted in their respective chapters; including them again with other, miscellaneous services would result in double counting.

Some overlap of function exists between the home medical equipment, hospice, and home services market. Kalorama Information has endeavored to disentangle these wherever possible.

Kalorama Information analyzed data from numerous sources in order to prepare this report. Secondary sources included information on disease etiology, treatment, and prevalence; statistics on home care agencies, patients, and reimbursement; regulations governing home care; financial information; a variety of databases; trade journals; and information from government agencies and trade organizations. Primary research included interviews with representatives of government agencies, trade organizations, and companies in the industry.

In estimating the size of the market, Kalorama Information analyzed the results of both primary and secondary research to develop estimates and projections. Factors considered included past market growth, past and current trends, population and demographic information, and industry status and direction.

In addition to market size and market share estimates for the 1998 base year, Kalorama Information provides historical market estimates for 1993 through 1997, as well as projections for 1999 through 2003. Compound annual growth rates are provided for 1993 to 1998, 1998 to 2003, and 1993 through 2003.
