It has been well recognized that the global pharmaceutical industry is facing a number of challenges at present. The difficulties the industry is experiencing have forced all drug companies to change their current operation models. They are now forced to pursue more efficient, cost-effective and productive ways to conduct their operations, whether in R&D or manufacturing. The keys for them to make a quick turnaround are to get drug discovered quicker, developed faster, manufactured cheaper and marketed wider.

Outsourcing has been proven to be one of the effective solutions for drug companies to quickly turn the situation around as it provides them with the desired efficiency, flexibility and agility. Among all emerging countries for outsourcing, China and India have risen rapidly and become stars in the global pharmaceutical outsourcing arena as both countries possess the unique combination of low cost and quality service. The current global financial crisis has also greatly enhanced the importance of these two countries to many drug companies around the world who are vigorously seeking cost reduction.

However, China and India each also possess their own, unique features and characteristics, not only in the pharmaceutical-related industries but also in almost every aspect of social structure. To many companies who are interested in conducting outsourcing or investment in either country, it is always a challenge to decide which country best fits their investment goals and which service provider in the selected country best fits the requirements of their projects.

The report, “Top 100 Best Pharma Outsourcing Service Providers in China and India” (An appendix to the report “Comparison of Pharma Outsourcing between China and India”, which was separately published by JZMed, Inc.), compiled the detailed company profiles of top 100 best outsourcing service providers in both China and India. It equally selected, among a large pool of service vendors, 50 best players in each country. The report contains the most valuable and desirable information sought by all pharma and biotech companies who are interested in outsourcing to either China or India.

After looking into the report, outsourcing companies will become comfortable directly approaching the interesting service providers in the selected country. The report will thus save them a preliminary trip to the country, which generally includes a team of company executives, before they start contacting the identified service providers. It will therefore save them a substantial amount of cost and time.

Selection criteria

The top 50 best players in each country are carefully selected based on the following criteria. Each player must:

1) Be publicly recognized as a major player in their home country; or
2) Be one of the largest in company size and service revenue in the industry sector of their home country; or
3) Have long existing service history in the industry in their home country; or
4) Be most active in their industry sector; or
5) Have the broadest service scope and the strongest service capabilities in their industry sector; or
6) Be the best in special technical areas even though the company is not big and/or old enough in their industry sector.

Categories Examined for Each Service Provider

For each selected best service provider in each country, the report examined a total of twelve technical categories (in addition to the detailed contact information) to comprehensively measure their service capabilities. These categories are considered the most important for an outsourcing company to know when it looks for a service provider in either China or India.

These examined categories include:

1. Full description of each provider’s service scope;
2. Analysis and comments of their service features and strengths;
3. Evaluation of their service capability levels according to international pharma outsourcing standard;
4. Description of their facility and capacity;
5. In-house products that are ready to offer;
6. The number of technical employees including the percentage of senior level scientists;
7. Year the service company was founded;
8. Service experience and customers each provider has served so far;
9. Latest annual service revenues;
10. Background of service provider’s founder(s) or current executive(s) including their scientific/education merits and work experiences.
11. Overall rating of a service provider among all selected CROs and CMOs;
12. Latest business move/development.
