More and more people, both professional and non-professional researchers, now look to the Internet as their primary medium for locating information. In part, this transition to web-based research grows out of the inherent access problems associated with traditional print resources and the brick-and-mortar libraries that house them. In addition, the rise of new media, with its multimedia capabilities and inclusion of user-generated content, has further driven researchers of all kinds to the Internet. That said, the field of web-based research is not without its controversial and challenging aspects. These include the enormous and ever-expanding volume and variety of information available on the Internet, concerns about the reliability of web-based information, and the technical limitations of search engines and other tools used in Internet research.
