Many small enterprises incrementally increase their compute power for specific applications or implement new, more demanding applications such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Mid-range servers utilizing multi-socket and multi-core processors provide expandability, good performance, and on-board storage. HP offers multi-socket servers and has now introduced a new, higher end rack-mount mid-range server, the ProLiant DL785 G5.

This 7U rack-mount server supports:

  • Up to 256GB of RAM.
  • Eight Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) internal bays for direct attached storage.
  • Redundant and hot-pluggable fans and power supplies.
  • PCI-e expansion slots.
  • HP management capabilities for local and remote operations.
For small enterprises, this platform can be used to consolidate multiple servers and applications into a single unit or provide complete capabilities for intensive database operations. This latest offering from HP puts them in the same ballpark as competitors Fujitsu, IBM, and Sun for multi-socket, multi-core mid-range servers.
