The WLAN market grew by 20.6% to $1.9 billion, driven by demand for wireless data connectivity. The 802.11g standard dominated unit shipments in 2008, and the WLAN technology is finding new markets in segments such as netbooks and consumer electronic devices. "WLAN semiconductors exhibited strong growth in 2008 in a tough macroenvironment, with growing demand from new application categories such as netbooks and growing attach rates in mobile phones, game consoles, and consumer electronic devices such as portable media players, digital still camera, and printers," says Ajit Deosthali, research manager, Short Range Wireless Semiconductors. |
