This IDC study examines the future of the worldwide smartphone market by operating system and region from 2012 to 2016.

"The worldwide smartphone market is heading for continued growth," says Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Underpinning the market is the constantly shifting mobile operating system landscape. We believe that Android and iOS will continue to lead the market, and the investment by both BlackBerry and Windows Phone will result in a hotly contested race for third place. Not to be overlooked is the dark horse of the group, Linux. Multiple companies have invested in developing platforms based on Linux, and depending on how these new experiences and devices are received, Linux could change the game."
