This IDC study presents IDC's forecast of spending growth for public IT cloud services through 2018, segmented by five functional categories within eight regions/countries. The forecast data, driven by IDC's key forecast assumptions for public IT cloud services development and adoption, leads to the study's key conclusions regarding cloud services growing in strategic importance to the IT industry, the market factors driving cloud services growth over the next five years, the shifting decision maker and customer segments driving cloud investments, and the strategic implications for providers and consumers of cloud services.
According to IDC Chief Analyst Frank Gens, "The cloud services market is now entering the "innovation stage" with an explosion of innovation and value creation on top of the cloud, along with mobile, social, and big data technologies. IDC predicts that a tripling community of developers will create a 10-fold increase in the number of new cloud-based solutions over the next four to five years. Many of these solutions will be at the core of radical transformation and disruption in virtually every industry. This means that cloud services will become more strategic than traditional IT has ever been. At the same time, we'll see unprecedented competition and consolidation among leading cloud providers. This combination of explosive innovation and intense competition will make 2015 a pivotal one for current and aspiring IT market leaders."
