This IDC study looks at the worldwide and U.S. markets for PC client sub form factors and forecasts them out to 2013. Twenty sub form factors from the desktop and portable PC form factor categories are tracked, and their growth rates and shipment numbers are estimated.

"The PC industry is continuing to slog through one of the toughest periods in its history. Average selling prices for PCs have taken a significant plunge following a late 2008 market collapse, and volumes also took a big hit. We're expecting shipment growth for 2009 to be slightly negative, with a boost coming in 2010 because of price drops, a commercial market rebound, and the launch of Windows 7. Market conditions haven't affected the industry's major form factor trend — the shift from desktops to portables — in fact, it has accelerated it thanks in large part to declines in average selling prices for portables spurring demand. As a result, we're expecting increasing innovation and product development to come from the portable market." — Richard Shim, research manager for IDC's Personal Computing team.
