This IDC study presents vendor shares for the nonrelational database systems (NDBMSs) market in 2009–2011 in terms of total software revenue. This study also offers commentary and analysis on the market, including its behavior in 2011 and its future prospects. It concludes with actionable advice for NDBMS vendors.
"The tepid growth of this market, which is heavily driven by mainframe software, was due largely to a softness in the mainframe market in 2011," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Database Management and Data Integration Software research at IDC. "NDBMS vendors must look to take advantage of the current climate, driven by Big Data and the NoSQL movement, which asserts that relational data organization is not the only way to go in dealing with important areas of enterprise data."
