This IDC study provides insight into demand, supply, and usage of bandwidth in the fixed broadband market in Western Europe. It analyzes the different types and definitions of bandwidth that are used in the market and identifies key factors that shape the development of average bandwidth. Pan-European data is provided for a number of key indicators with respect to bandwidth development.
"Providers that continue to rely on ADSL will increasingly find themselves in a difficult position as they will face pressure from two sides. On one side, they will lose ground to increasing next-generation access technologies that they cannot match in terms of performance and service portfolio. On the other hand, mobile broadband services, enabled by technologies like HSPA and LTE, are catching up in terms of performance, and these can prove to be alternatives in some cases," said Jan Hein Bakkers, research manager, IDC European Telecommunications and Networking.
