This IDC study examines the pricing trends of smartphones by mobile operator, vendor, and operating system in the United States for the quarter ending March 31, 2012. Specifically, this study looks at no-commitment prices, prices on a two-year contract, and prices after incentives. This study leverages IDC's United States Bimonthly City-Level Smartphone Pricing database, which tracks these data points by mobile operator, vendor, operating system, and model.

"Pricing remains, and continues to be, one of the leading factors in purchasing a new smartphone," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team. "While it's easy to categorize smartphones as a more expensive proposition compared with feature phones, we have found significant differences based on vendor, operating system, and mobile operator."
