This IDC Retail Insights Perspective looks at the growing interest in supply chain segmentation in the consumer goods industry. As we moved through 2011, we found that the demand side of the supply chain was far more volatile and unpredictable, with forecast accuracy becoming even more of a challenge than it had been historically, and the conversation shifted from forecasting to fast planning and responsiveness. Shocks (literally and figuratively) to the supply side of the supply chain are forcing manufacturers to reexamine their supply networks considering risk management and lead-time assessments.
