This IDC Retail Insights Perspective examines the April 2012 announcement by Macy's CEO Terry J. Lundgren that the retailer is taking steps to "make them [customers] as comfortable and ready to buy in our stores as they do online." This comes against the backdrop that Macy's expects its online sales to reach $2 billion this year, 7% of sales, on the heels of a 39.6% year-on-year increase in online sales last year.

We review elements of the initiative in the context of our recent outlook on trends in merchandising strategies and retail analytics published in Merchandising Strategies and Retail Analytics Top 10 2012 Trends (IDC Retail Insights #GRI233829, March 2012). In addition, this Perspective relates Macy's initiative to Nordstrom's capital expenditure plan to invest nearly $1 billion in ecommerce.
