Perspective: CMS Issues Proposed Rule for Stage 2 Meaningful Use

This IDC Health Insights Perspective provides a summary of the differences between the Stage 1 and Stage 2 requirements for meaningful use of electronic health records and examines the implications for health information exchange and accountable care. The proposed rule for Stage 2 was announced by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on February 24, 2012, and officially published in the Federal Register on March 7, 2012. The 60-day public comment period ends on May 7. Stage 2 requirements take effect in October 2013 for EHs/CAHs and January 2014 for EPs.
