This IDC study, presents a summary of a survey conducted among WAN managers of companies with 100 or more employees on various topics including the use of leased lines, IP VPN, wide area Ethernet, wireless data lines, overseas WAN implementation, network redundancy, and IT contracts/budgets. IDC Japan has conducted this survey for five consecutive years and has also compared the trends over time.

"In the current survey, it is evident that there is a high demand for functions that allow temporary increase in access or traffic exceeding the contract bandwidth and for functions that automate the operation and management of network equipment at small and medium locations. The use of quality lines that can handle large volume such as leased lines and wide area Ethernet, is more prevalent among datacenters and R&D centers than in corporate headquarters. Also, the manufacturing industry tends to select foreign-funded communication providers as their overseas WAN provider. It is necessary for communication providers to strengthen their access line product lineup in order to cater fully to the needs of user companies. They should also continue to strengthen their competitiveness by offering services that fit users' needs such as to reduce companies' total cost of ownership (TCO)," analyzes Yoko Ono, senior market analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
