This IDC study analyzes the Japan telecommunication services market in 2012 and presents forecasts for the 2013–2017 market. This analysis is based on information gathered from interviews with carriers, company financial statements, government statistics, and IDC user surveys.

Amid the rapidly growing demand for mobile broadband services driven by the spread of smartphones, it has become necessary for carriers to focus on high-speed services. Meanwhile, IDC believes that it is important for service providers to come up with offload promotion strategy regarding fixed infrastructure from the perspective of complementing the capacity. Hence, it is necessary to devise a strategy that takes into account both fixed and mobile lines. In addition to the rapidly increasing need to analyze the ROI of network spending, simplifying and improving the efficiency of network operations and enhancing the competitiveness to deal with over-the-top players, carriers should also constantly refine their OSS/BSS, says Yuta Torisu, research analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
