This IDC study (a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J11420104) presents the performance of the Japan tape drive and tape automation markets from 2008 to 2010, and market forecasts for 2011-2015. The performance and forecasts were analyzed in terms of revenue and unit shipments. Tape drive shipments were analyzed and forecast by capacity while tape automation shipments were analyzed and forecast based on the number of cartridges.

"The disaster has (re)directed many Japan companies to the importance of disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) solutions. This may be an opportunity for the tape storage market. It is important for tape storage suppliers to capture the demand with DR solutions that use remote storage for tape cartridges. However, demand for DR solutions alone will not propel the tape storage market to positive growth. To expand the tape automation business, it is necessary for vendors to promote the demand for archives as a new demand segment," says Ayuchi Takamatsu, market analyst, Storage Systems, IDC Japan.
