This IDC study, provides an analysis of 2009–2013 Japan shipment results for Fibre Channel (FC) switches, a main component of storage networking infrastructure, as well as forecasts up to 2018. The analysis of FC switch shipment results is based on unit shipments, port shipments, and factory revenue, while the forecast is based on port shipments and factory revenue. Furthermore, the report provides detailed revenue results for 2009–2013 from the Japan external disk storage system market, by specific protocol (direct-attached storage [DAS], mainframe networked, network-attached storage [NAS], FC-SAN, iSCSI, FCoE, SAS-SAN, InfiniBand), along with a forecast up to 2018; this offers an opportunity to analyze the effect that the diversification of protocols has on storage networking infrastructure in Japan.
IDC Japan Group Director Masaaki Moriyama provides the following analysis: "New transformations are now occurring within the Japan storage market. As these transformations proceed, it is forecasted that, in the mid-to-long term, there will be large fluctuations in investment in storage networks. Storage vendors and storage network vendors will need to aggressively go forward with product, partnership, acquisition, and other strategies."
