This IDC study, which is a translation of the Japan report IDC #J9450107, presents the 2004-2008 performance of the market for Fibre Channel (FC) switch, which forms the main component of the storage area network (SAN) in Japan, and the market forecast for the period up to 2013. The shipment results are analyzed based on unit shipments, port shipments, and revenue. The forecasts are analyzed based on port shipments and revenue. FC switches are divided into three categories, namely fixed-port switches, chassis switches, and blade server-embedded switches. Their market sizes are calculated and forecast in this study. Meanwhile, FC hub, Enterprise System Connection (ESCON) director, SAN router, and SAN-related software are excluded in this study.

"FC switch vendors face a short-term task of countering the suppression of storage investments amid economic recession and worsening corporate performance. As a long-term challenge, they have to establish a business model for the deployment of the next-generation storage network infrastructure," says Masaaki Moriyama, group director, Storage/Server/HCP, IDC Japan.
