This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report, IDC #J9120108) examines and analyzes the needs and utilization trends of small-and-medium-sized business (SMB)-oriented sales channels for servers, PCs, external storage devices, and packaged software based on the results of the second part of the Japan SMB User Survey, 2009 conducted in July 2009.

The product implementation areas respondents were most dissatisfied with were vendors' ability to propose solutions and prices, particularly among companies with less than 100 employees. This shows that besides the provision of equipment, SMBs are also expecting to get solution proposals. On the other hand, due to the recession and sluggish SMB IT spending, the business performances of systems integration (SI) vendors and sales distributors targeting SMBs have been deteriorating. Consequently, SI vendors and sales distributors aim to increase or maintain their revenue by strengthening their solution and service offerings to SMBs. "In order to reinforce their sales channels, it will be important for IT vendors to strengthen policies that support solution and service provision by SMB-oriented SI vendors and sales distributors," says Hitoshi Ichimura, market analyst, IT Spending Research, IDC Japan.
