This IDC study (a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J12120101) looks at the major policies related to the Japan healthcare market (including medical care, healthcare/welfare, and pharmaceuticals/life sciences), the latest healthcare Smart City IT trends as of 3Q11, and some of the post-disaster reconstruction programs developed by local governments. We also report the levels of spending on healthcare IT and healthcare industry smart city IT in 2010, and project the spending sizes in 2011-2015 based on basic data published in Japan Vertical Market: IT Spending 2011-2015 Forecast and First-Half 2011 Analysis (IDC #J12481001, November 2011) and Japan IT Market for Smart City 2011-2015 Forecast Update (IDC #J11651001, August 2011).

The healthcare/wellness/welfare smart city program that is committed to the well-being of communities can be leveraged by companies to improve their brand images. "ICT vendors that provide smart city solutions should endeavor to strengthen their relationships with local governments, communities, and NPOs through the use of social media. By fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities, they will also improve the appeal of their corporate brands," says Eiji Sasahara, research manager, IT Spending, IDC Japan.
