This IDC study (a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J10510108) analyzes the Japan disk storage systems market (external and internal combined) based on the "consumption model." The consumption model is composed of four segments — traditional structured data, traditional unstructured data, traditional replicated data, and content depots. We analyze the characteristics of these four segments, and their respective growth accelerators and inhibitors. We also size the market segments in 2005-2009 (actual performance) and 2010-2014 (forecast) from two perspectives, specifically customer revenue and capacity shipments. In addition, we split the Japan disk storage systems market into two segments — "systems for user companies" and "systems for SPs" — and size the segments in 2008-2009 (actual performance) and 2010-2014 (forecast) based on customer revenue and capacity shipments.

"As disk storage system needs diversify, new business opportunities will be created for storage vendors. It is important for storage vendors to develop products and cultivate needs after identifying the markets they should focus on and whether they should adopt profit- or revenue-focused strategies," says Masaaki Moriyama group director, IDC Japan.
