This IDC study highlights demand-side results from U.S. customer perceptions of vendors for infrastructure outsourcing services in ranking their effectiveness in delivering these services across five markets. These markets include traditional (more labor-centric) datacenter outsourcing, network outsourcing, and desktop outsourcing as well as newer models including public and/or private infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and hosted virtualized desktop services. The results of this study will help provide infrastructure outsourcing providers and vendors with a framework of competitive positioning based on customer perception across these markets, along with developing an optimal ecosystem of partnerships. Further, this study provides IDC insight into what are key areas of focus that vendors need to address to ensure both short-term and long-term success based on customer need and market directions.

"Success as an infrastructure outsourcing provider in today's market will require players to drive a brand image of providing low-cost services for customers though with a focus on optimizing service delivery and providing value that can support more immediate needs, which increasingly requires the implementation of newer technologies and service delivery capabilities," says David Tapper, VP, Outsourcing and Offshore Services. "In particular, players looking to compete successfully in these markets need to develop very robust road maps of how customers are looking to adopt utility-based services (e.g., SaaS, IaaS); look to cannibalize traditional services; create new partnership and channel ecosystems; target new markets, particularly the SMB and emerging; define new market metrics for measuring and managing success; and look beyond the world of IT for new opportunities."
