European End-User Software Trends 2011: Adoption of Open Source Enterprise Applications

This IDC study examines the current state of open source enterprise application adoption across Western Europe in 2011 from end-user and vendor perspectives. The end-user analysis presents the results of a recent IDC survey of 693 European organizations' attitudes to enterprise applications and usage of open source software. The vendor analysis is based on analysis of three vendors of open source enterprise applications in Europe: Openbravo, vtiger, and SugarCRM. Finally, the study examines future market implications for open source enterprise applications and provides advice to both the end-user and vendor communities.

"Open source enterprise application vendors have expanded their market across Europe and are becoming more commercial in their approach by focusing on business value and TCO. The survey results show that open source adoption in ERP and CRM has grown significantly from 2009 to 2011. The survey data suggests that the growth in recognition and adoption of cloud/SaaS by end users is stimulating a change in procurement and deployment approaches that open source enterprise application vendors can take advantage of to maintain growth across Europe," said Spencer Izard, research manager, European Enterprise Applications, IDC.
