Data Deduplication Gaining Adoption and Enabling Disk-Based Data Protection and Recovery
This IDC study provides an understanding of the adoption of disk-based data protection including recovery and backup as well as storage optimization such as data deduplication.
"Currently, many firms using traditional backup and recovery methodologies are not well equipped to adequately protect their burgeoning virtual environments. Firms must invest in new versions of existing data protection to take advantage of storage optimization capabilities such as data deduplication. As a result, we are seeing increased adoption of purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) to forgo these new investments in data protection software and associated upgrade costs. The PBBA solutions are cost-effectively addressing the data protection challenges that firms are facing, particularly very large firms. The PBBA products provide disk-based backup and recovery as well as integrated storage optimization capabilities such as data deduplication and remote replication." — Robert Amatruda, research director, Data Protection and Recovery, and Amita Potnis, senior research analyst, Storage Systems
