This IDC Manufacturing Insights study provides an analysis of survey results regarding manufacturing IT application in the Western European manufacturing industry. The survey is based on 445 interviews held in summer 2010 with firms operating across Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, and Spain. In this study, we show adoption levels and investments plans for 7 manufacturing IT applications: enterprise asset management (EAM), enterprise manufacturing intelligence (EMI), factory automation, materials tracking, manufacturing execution systems (MES), production scheduling, and quality management.

"Advanced applications such as MES are still not so widespread on the market, but are raising much interest," said Lorenzo Veronesi, research analyst, IDC EMEA Manufacturing Insights. "Manufacturing companies have very good reasons to undertake a thorough transformation of their operations management, aiming toward real-time manufacturing operations."
