This IDC study discusses the business rules management systems (BRMS) market that has for several decades been the focal point for automating decisions. However, more recently, the advent of complex event processing (CEP) has emerged, providing a very different yet complementary decisioning technology. IDC has sized and forecast both these markets and therefore is familiar with the opportunities and challenges that each market faces. This document evaluates role analytics, BRMS, and CEP; forwards an integrated approach to addressing decisioning; and identifies a variety of architectural characteristics that need to be present in the converged decision management platform. "The concept of a decision management platform brings all types of decisioning together under one roof," said Stephen D. Hendrick, group vice president for Application Development and Deployment Research. "By doing so, users will find it easier to leverage decisioning in an explicit, complete, and consistent way." |
