The market hype around Big Data is great and continues to grow. Big Data is a blend of new technologies (such as Hadoop) and some existing technologies (such as accelerated data warehouses and scale-out storage). This survey tested activities and intentions around Big Data across 700 European respondents.
"29% of respondents say they are ready for Big Data. However, 28% of respondents say Big Data is a new name for something they are already doing," said Alys Woodward, research director, IDC European Business Analytics, Collaboration, and Social Solutions. "The challenge for vendors is to identify whether branding their products as Big Data generates customer interest or cynicism. A tenuous link to one of the four Vs is likely to read to the latter rather than the former."
"Big Data is very much a large enterprise problem, and adoption is expected to come from Europe's largest organizations," said Carla Arend, research director, IDC Information Strategies, Storage, and Content Management Software. "Vendors are advised to develop messaging targeted at large companies in specific industries, as use cases differ significantly between industries."
