This IDC study examines the amount of money users pay per month for their smartphone service in the United States. Smartphone users in the United States generate an average of $108.78 per month for carriers. What makes this all the more impressive is comparing it with the amount generated per month by traditional mobile phone users ($76.29), which clearly shows the benefits for carriers of having a robust and compelling smartphone portfolio.

Still, not all smartphones and operating systems are able to generate the same levels of revenue. "Different operating systems and smartphone vendors provide different experiences, resulting in monthly bills that can run as low at $75 per month but as high as $115 per month," points out Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Device Technology and Trends team. "While some of this can be explained by carrier pricing practices, a great deal is also explained by the data capabilities of the device and how well the operating system carries those out."
