With the promise of improving economic conditions removing some pressure for rapid ICT spending changes, in 2010 we expect that some of the hype around cloud services and technologies will abate, as time, understanding of cloud capabilities and limitations will increase, and maturing cloud services will allow for proper evaluations of cloud solutions. The year's key cloud-related events will revolve around some major areas of opportunity: the very strategic cloud platforms (and application programming interfaces [APIs]) battle, a wave of new public cloud services, the emergence and popularity of private cloud offerings, the rapid expansion of "appliance" versions of private and public cloud offerings, a growing variety of hybrid (public/private) cloud management offerings, and expanding distribution channels based on cloud services APIs. "The next three years will see fundamental changes within the ICT market, as more users consistently adopt more externally sourced services from cloud or managed service providers. The influence of the hardware and software OEMs will decline, and we expect the locus of power to move from the enterprise customer to the provider of cloud, managed, and outsourced services," says Chris Morris, research director, Services, IDC Asia/Pacific. |
