Pumps represent a diverse body of machine devices used to move fluids that include liquids, gases across a wide range of pressures, and chemical and geological slurries (solids-containing liquids). Pumps work by displacing and forcing a volume of gas, liquid or slurry through pipes and working systems. Related devices include also compressors and blowers that are responsible for moving gases, frequently pressurizing gases and reducing their volume in order to conveniently transport them through a system.

Major pump designs include positive displacement (rotary, piston, diaphragm, progressive cavity pump) and centrifugal pumps. Positive displacement pumps – especially diaphragm and progressive cavity pumps – are flexible in application and can handle working fluids such as industrial slurries, sewage, and other substances that could impede and more rapidly wear away centrifugal pumps. When properly applied and installed, centrifugal pumps are capable of moving immense fluid volumes at high efficiency. Inefficiencies can develop from the high energy usage or consumption of centrifugal pumps. The rotary design of centrifugal pumps that include impellers also make them vulnerable to cavitation, faster wear rates, and corrosion. Centrifugal pumps remain heavily utilized devices in heavy industry, materials processing, and the oil and gas industries.

Centrifugal pumps also operate as compressors or blowers when moving pressurized or liquefied gases. Compressors are also classified by positive displacement and dynamic (centrifugal and axial). Axial compressors are classified as turbomachinery, a group that includes components of gas turbines and jet engines used to pressurize fuel gas prior to combustion and turbochargers for vehicle engine systems.
