Gold Mining: market research reports
Gold mining consists of the processes and techniques employed in the removal of gold from the ground. There are several techniques by which gold may be extracted from the earth. Methods of gold mining include panning, sluicing, dredging, cradling, and hard rock mining.
Mercury is often used to amalgamate with the metal to maximize gold extraction. Gold is produced by boiling away the mercury from the amalgam, a process which is hazardous due to the toxicity of mercury vapor. Mercury is effective in extracting very small gold particles, but must be treated carefully after use.
Newmont Mining Corporation, Barrick Gold, AngloGold Ashanti and Goldcorp are the world's four largest gold mining companies.
Mining also produces gold as a by-product. Large copper mines often recover considerable amounts of gold and other metals along with the copper. Some sand and gravel pits, may recover small amounts of gold in their washing operations. The largest-producing gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia, is primarily a copper mine.
