Major St. Louis health systems continue to expand to prepare for greater demand for medical services as baby boomer age into the Medicare program and many younger people become eligible for health insurance subsidies in 2014. After the Supreme Court ruled that the landmark Affordable Care Act was constitutional and President Barack Obama secured reelection in 2012, more health systems are signaling a willingness to participate in payment models such as accountable care organizations and bundled payments. To help gain more control over population health management, which is important with these payment models, the trend of physician group consolidation into large health systems continues to accelerate in St. Louis. Meanwhile, managed care organizations are beginning to prepare for a large influx on new enrollees in 2014 when the federally-run health insurance exchange comes online in Missouri.
