World demand for wheat is growing 1% a year and is forecast to be worth over US$107 billion by 2004. Asia remains as largest consuming region of wheat, accounting for 48% of world consumption. South & Central America account for 4% of the world market and are experiencing a strong average annual growth rate of almost 3%. The leading producers of wheat are China, India and the USA. Their combined manufacturing output exceeds 230 million tonnes a year, which is 42% of global production. Egypt, Brazil, and Italy are the leading importers.
