Summary

India currently has a total installed capacity of 171,421 MW with nuclear capacity of 3,897 MW as of 2010. The country has 20 operating nuclear reactors which are of Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) type. The nuclear generation was about 21 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) for 2010. Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited are the key players in India’s nuclear power industry. The nuclear power contribution is about 2.5% to the total electricity production. Presently, five reactors are under construction and more than 30 reactors are under planned/ proposed stages. The country is planning to increase its nuclear capacity to 20 GW by 2020. One of the major developmental programs carried out in the field of nuclear power in the country is the refurbishment programs. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) are the main regulatory bodies in the field of nuclear energy in India. The country has abundant thorium reserves and has plans to develop advanced reactor systems which utilize thorium as nuclear fuel.
