India currently has a total installed capacity of 171,421 MW with nuclear capacity of 3,897 MW as of 2010. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) are the main regulatory bodies in the field of nuclear energy in India. The country has abundant thorium reserves and has plans to develop advanced reactor systems which utilize thorium as nuclear fuel.
