Afghanistan’s Mining Industry on the Path of Development

Summary

Afghanistan is exploring its mineral resource potential in an effort to reconstruct its economy after several decades of war. The US agencies which assisted the Afghan government in mapping the country’s mineral potential through hyperspectral imaging and advanced remote sensing techniques have valued Afghanistan’s mineral wealth at around $1 trillion in 2010, although Afghan Ministry of Mines pegged the value at $3 trillion (this estimated value takes into account only 30% of the Afghan territory) (ACCI, 2012a).
