Report Excerpt

There are three kinds of transmission suppliers in the repair market.

1. Remanufacturers (Reman)

Transmissions remanufactured to specific guidelines are sold to independent aftermarket companies such as Jasper and Certified, and to Original Equipment Service (OES) participants such as ATC and CAT. Remanufacturers which only sell into the OES are also called original equipment remanufacturers (OERs).

2. Rebuilders (Rebuild or Rebuilt)

Transmission specialist shops who rebuild transmissions. Shops perform approximately 4 transmission rebuild jobs per week.

3. Used Transmission Suppliers (Used or Salvage)

Includes companies such as LKQ which remove transmissions from a salvaged vehicle, or a vehicle that has been titled “total loss”. The transmission is remarketed through private or consolidated auto parts recyclers.
