Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as an infection is reaching epidemic proportions across the world. Although the global market for HIV diagnostics and monitoring has successfully produced revolutionary testing technologies, they remain largely unavailable in developing countries and regions such as China, India, and Africa that house a staggering 95 percent of all HIV infected individuals. These countries constantly battle enormous poverty, poor healthcare systems, insufficient resources for prevention and care, and the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. This situation is worsened by the inability of educational campaigns to reach the sections of society that are most affected by HIV. Without the necessary funds to spend on monitoring and studying possible drug resistance, such countries present a huge challenge to physicians that are unable to perform monitoring tests and consequently market participants are not able to generate revenue from these tests.

Bulk of Profits Expected from the United States and Europe

The HIV diagnostics and monitoring markets in the United States and Europe account for a majority of the revenues generated. "The United States is expected to continue to be a primary profit center for HIV diagnostic test manufacturers despite its low rate of HIV prevalence because the regional pharmacoeconomics support the cost of the tests and monitoring," says Ajmani. Europe is expected to be equally profitable due to the increasing drug resistance in patients and the better reimbursement rates available. Patients in these markets are able to afford expensive screening and genotyping tests and do not mind paying the high prices to enjoy a better quality of life.
